Dear NYMA Community,

Yesterday, a parent informed us that one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19. The parent wanted to assure us that she felt confident that it was not contracted on our campus.  Per the parent’s instructions, the cadet departed our campus on leave from NYMA 12 days ago, on March 13th. NYMA had already instituted the “no return to campus” policy so there was no subsequent contact with our community after that date. The travel itinerary included Philadelphia, Maryland, Philadelphia, Flushing and then NYC for the eventual flight home. Given this timeline, itinerary, and exposure while traveling, the parent believes that the virus was contracted after the departure from the Academy.  On a positive note, students traveling internationally directly from our campus have been tested upon arrival and the results have been negative.  

We have notified our local health authorities of the confirmed diagnosis and informed them that the student is currently being monitored with only  moderate symptoms. We are relieved that the cadet appears to be on the road to recovery.

We will continue to be as transparent as possible with any information regarding the outbreak of COVID-19. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation while we cope with changing conditions here at the Academy and around the world.
