Cadet Creativity (6/13)

Our cadets wrapped up the year in Studio Art creating installation projects that were designed for an area inside our buildings…

1. Cadets Montes and Vas created this mural to represent NYMA.

2. Cadets Isaacs and Antoine created this basketball hoop out of plastic, cardboard, tape, wire, and paint.

3. Cadets Zhao, Zhou, and Yang created this musical mural.

4. Cadets McKenzie and Urso created this astronaut helmet.

5. Cadet Pauletta’s printmaking peace banner.

6. Cadet Elhouti’s NYC mobile is made from CD’s.

7. Cadets Graham and Walker created this jellyfish mural.

8. Cadet Yang created this large painting that is displayed in the main office.


Cadet Creativity (5/5)

1. Cadet Elhouti created this distressed treasure map for her Extinction project. She dyed the paper with tea to make it look aged.

2. Cadet Sun created this oil painting.

3. Cadets Zhou, Zhao, and Yang are currently working on a mural in the art/music hallway for their final project.

4. Cadet Isaacs created this wood-burned and lightly painted honey bee for his Conservation project.

5. Another cadet focused on honey bees as well. Cadet Lhermite just joined our art class and created this elaborate Altoid tin with polymer clay and pages of a book.

6. Cadet Kruk created this geometric/cubist cloud out of cardboard and fabric fill.

7. Cadet Yang attended the Congressional Art Reception and received a certificate for her participation in the Congressional Art Competition. She was also able to meet Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney. It was a lovely event!

Weekly Sports Recap (1/26/18)

Congratulations to Senior Zamere McKenzie who was selected as a nominee to this year’s McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team.

On Saturday, 1/20, the Varsity Basketball Team was back in action after a month off and some weather-related cancellations. NYMA (5-2) played host to a very talented Springfield Commonwealth Academy team. NYMA won by a score of 75-69. The Knights were led by Zaahir Woody who finished with 33 points. Zamere McKenzie and Brandon Evans added 11 points each while Josh Antoine had 9. Will Mayfield and Jalen Ricks had 6 points each.

NYMA Wrestling kicked off their season on Saturday, 1/20, at Loomis Chaffe. Overall it was a good day for the young Knights who won four and lost six. Eighth-grader Nathan Kratman won both his matches, sophomore Matthew Montes won one match, and Freshmen Kobe Parker won one match as well.

On Monday, 1/22, The Varsity Basketball team (6-2) traveled to Marvelwood for a HVAL game. NYMA won impressively by the score of 78-30. The Knights were led by Zaahir Woody with 19 points, Zamere Mckenzie added 13 points, Josh Antoine had 12, Will Mayfield and Brandon Evans had 9 points each, Karif Isaacs had 7, and Nigel Petti-Fernandez finished with 4 points. Jalen Ricks, David Pinto-Ricardo (in his first career start), and Mickey Urso each had 2 points as well.

On Wednesday, 1/24, we had a busy day at NYMA as JV Basketball hosted Upper Room Christian from Long Island, Varsity Basketball hosted Oakwood Friends, Bowling had its first matches of the season, and last but not least, Wrestling had a multi-event at Avon Old Farms. There they competed against Woodhall, AOF, and Taft.

JV Basketball lost to Upper Room Christian by a score of 76-68. Remy Sykes and Bob Wang led the team in scoring with 8 points each.

Varsity Basketball beat Oakwood Friends 73-26. NYMA was led by Zaahir Woody who finished with 23 points. Other cadets who chipped in included Branden Evans, Zamere McKenzie and Karif Isaacs with 12 a piece while Will Mayfield added 8 points. Jalen Ricks finished with 7 points and 10 assists.

The Bowling team’s first match of the season was versus Storm King. We bowl the best 2 of 3 games and Storm King came out hot winning game one 146-80.  But Games 2 and 3 were won by NYMA giving us a big first win over Storm King (Game 2: 74-65, Game 3: 107-65). Notable players in this match were Adam Sun and Simon Lin who threw clutch shots to secure a NYMA victory for this first big match. NYMA’s second match was against Faith Christian Academy. NYMA beat FCA in game one 80-53, but games 2 and 3 were won by FCA (77-60, 94-76). We tried our best, but came up short in the end. The next match is at Pat Tarsio Lanes on Wednesday, 1/31 at 3:00pm if anyone would like to come watch!

On Wednesday, 1/24, the NYMA Wrestling Team participated in its second JV Jamboree of the season. The wrestlers traveled to Avon Old Farms School to wrestle The Taft School, Avon Old Farms, and Woodhall School. The Knights finished the day 5-5-1. Mr. Roselli was very proud of the way the team wrestled and continues to see improvement as the year progresses. This is a rebuilding year for the Knights. This year’s team members are Matthew Montes (team captain), Jamel Pauletta, Donovan Green, Tim Deluniversita, Kobie Parker, Nathan Kratman and Daniel Geng. The Knights have four more matches left on their schedule.
