The very essence of being a NYMA Cadet consists of some simple things that cannot be ignored. Being in the right uniform, keeping your rooms to standard, being on time for class and following appearance regulations to name a few. Individually they are simple tasks, as Admiral William H. McRaven noted, “mundane at best.” “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day,” he noted in his address to the graduating class of The University of Texas at Austin, in May of 2014. “It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.” So, if you hear your cadet complain about how Sargent Waring did this or did that. Remember I am trying to teach our Corps of Cadets success and it begins with those little things like making a bed and in the long run, hopefully our Corps, when it matters, can do the big things right. — Christine C.
