Jonathan Gastel, Ph.D.

Assistant Superintendent

Dr. Gastel, who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and his Ph.D from Johns Hopkins University, brings to the New York Military Academy a strong desire to propel students to higher standards for academics, leadership, and character. Before joining NYMA he taught various subjects in both public and private schools locally and internationally, including Stuyvesant High School in New York City. He also created and led several successful project-based instructional programs and was Supervisor of Secondary Science at Pelham, NY.


Maria Reeves

Dean of Academics

Maria Reeves joined the NYMA staff in August of 2006. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at Geneseo and her Master of Arts degree, also in Psychology, from Teachers College, Columbia University. She has held many positions within the Academy and is often called upon for her experience in residential life, admissions, classroom management, testing, counseling, and the college application process. As the current PDSO for SEVIS, she is specifically responsible for international students entering the country. Her greatest work is helping students realize their full potential while using a very individualized approach. Ms. Reeves creates many opportunities for students to participate in community service because she would like to instill the belief that we are all stewards of our community.


John Dolan

Director of Admissions

Mr. Dolan has put forward 25 years of experience working in an educational environment, 21 years with the New York Police Department, and 27 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve. He has a strong ability to maintain the continuing flow of quality applicants and recognize core trends effectively. Mr. Dolan’s strength in admissions and marketing educational curriculums is a huge asset to NYMA.



Andrew Erickson

Assistant Director of Admissions

Andrew Erickson loves military school. Having attended one for high school and junior college, he wants more students to have this enriching experience and learn all the great life skills that these unique institutions can provide. Mr. Erickson received his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University and has worked as a teacher, coach, photographer, resident faculty officer, marketer, and in admissions. Mr. Erickson is joined on campus by his beautiful wife Jennifer and two wonderful children.  They are all excited about moving to New York and exploring the Hudson Valley. In his free time, Andrew enjoys reading, kayaking, hiking, and computer programming.


Richard Thorn

Director of Dining Facilities

Richard Thorn is a culinary professional with over 30 years of experience in all aspects of food service. He is an alumnus of Paul Smith’s College (A.A.S. Culinary Arts) and has served in the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Service (MS2-SS). After his time in the Navy, Mr. Thorn became a certified Dietary Manager and worked in contract food service. He was assigned to a variety of locations throughout the region including medical, corporate, recreational and educational facilities. Richard Thorn is returning to NYMA where he was Food Service Director from 2013-2015.


Joseph Naseef


Joseph Naseef is the new Commandant here at NYMA. His role is to enforce the standards of the cadet manual, counsel cadets to resolve infractions, and foster a healthy environment for our cadets to thrive in. Mr. Naseef recently retired from the U.S. Army where he deployed overseas several times. First with the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment at Vilseck, Germany, again in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2007-2008), and then to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2011-2012). Mr. Naseef is a recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heat, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal. Prior to joining our team, he was a MS100 college instructor for the Military Science Division at West Point for four years. He will be teaching a Military Familiarization class as well as a Military Science course here at NYMA.


Bobby Rahn

Athletic Coordinator
Mr. Robert Rahn comes to NYMA from John S. Burke Catholic High School where he taught, was Dean of Discipline, and coached their basketball team to a New York State Championship. He is passionate about helping students reach their potential through participation in athletics. Mr. Rahn excels at helping student-athletes improve their academic record by creating a supportive environment both on and off the court. Additionally, he has extensive experience at finding his student-athletes excellent opportunities at the collegiate and even professional levels. Here at NYMA, Mr. Rahn will continue coaching and organizing his very popular basketball camps and tournaments. It is his goal to lead the entire athletic program at the academy into a new period of growth and achievement. Mr. Rahn will also teach health and wellness classes to both middle and high school students.


Susan O'Dell, R.N.

Health Services Manager and Head Nurse
Susan O’Dell joined the NYMA team at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.  She earned her RN from Rockland Community College while taking some classes at Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY. After nearly a decade in the Cardiac ICU, Ms. O’Dell started a family and became part of the team at a large pediatric practice. Most recently Susan became certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and worked at a pediatric urgent care specializing in treating infants to young adults. Working closely with children and their parents is Susan’s calling and she has really been enjoying her time here at NYMA.


Nick Mishkovski

Director of Facilities
Nick Mishkovski holds a master’s degree in History and EPA Universal Certification from The National Center for Construction Education and Research. He joined NYMA in December of 2015 after working at the United States Military Academy and TF Cornerstone in NYC. Nick also brings more than 15 years of experience in construction. Mr. Mishkovski's goal is to bring the academy’s facilities back to their full potential and glory while maintaining the safety and security of NYMA’s cadets and employees.
