A Message from the Admissions Office
Academics, Athletics, Character, and Leadership are what set New York Military Academy apart from other college prep schools. Located less than 60 miles northwest of New York City, NYMA has been educating young men since 1889 and welcomed our first young women in 1976 and currently provides both boarding and day school instruction for 8th – 12th grade cadets. Our military tradition provides structure and creates a unique learning environment for our cadets, one that helps them achieve their full potential and academic goals while developing their leadership qualities.
We believe New York Military Academy cadets are “Set Apart for Excellence”. We achieve this goal by challenging our cadets to be inspired, engaged, and ready for their future. The academics are intentionally rigorous and demanding. It’s about setting goals and learning how to meet them. Our cadets learn that effort is expected, respect is earned, and achievement is admired.
Our class size average is 12 students or less per teacher. NYMA academics help our cadets become lifelong learners rewarding our cadets with confidence, success, leadership and service. Academically, our cadets learn to think critically, communicate clearly, creatively and logically. Because our class sizes are small with rigorous academics and selective admissions, class rank is statistically invalid and not a proper indicator for college performance; therefore, we do not rank our cadets. Being an SAT and an ACT testing sight, our cadets are well prepared for these academic exams. For our domestic cadets, an SAT prep course is part of our cadet’s schedule in preparation for the exam and our international cadets have the TOEFL prep course in preparation for the TOEFL exam. The top 25% of our cadets score an 1850 or higher on the SAT.
We motivate, stimulate minds and provide an avenue for our cadets to achieve leadership roles through our JROTC program. One set of skills reinforces another. All our cadets are involved in a sport each season, as well as opportunities for band and marching parades. Our strong academic program provides skills for the proper use of language fluently as he/she reads, writes and speaks. Cadets are also involved in community service.
NYMA students come from ten different countries outside the US. We encourage our international students by offering special courses to ease their transition. Students continue receiving instruction in ESL – English as a Second Language until ability to succeed without additional resources are demonstrated. NYMA will determine the proper placement of our international students based on standardized test scores, (i.e., SLEP and TOEFL) as well as grade reports, transcripts and teacher/counselor recommendation forms. There is also a summer ESL program available for incoming international cadets.
Our structured environment provides fewer distractions and enables our cadets to reach their full potential and develop the skills to set them up for success in life. We welcome the opportunity to show you our campus.
Due to the low student-to-teacher ratio and small class sizes, we encourage parents to contact us as early as possible. It benefits both parents and students to mail the completed, signed and dated application, registration, academic transcripts and recommendations. All necessary paperwork must be submitted prior to interview for admission consideration.
Admissions to New York Military Academy is selective. The applicants to the school are selected for academic potential, intellectual ability and emotional maturity. Parents should schedule an appointment with their child to visit regarding admissions and tour campus with one of our cadets. For international students, please call and arrange for a phone or Skype interview. A visit to our campus will provide an opportunity to observe our cadet life.
We invite you to call and set up an appointment to find out more about New York Military Academy.
