Welcome to New York Military Academy (NYMA). Founded in 1889, it is one of America’s oldest boarding schools with a premier college preparatory program posting a 100% college placement record. Located approximately 60 miles north of New York City, nestled in the picturesque Hudson Valley of New York state, our plush 120 acre campus in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson has a clean, small town, fresh air atmosphere. We are a co-ed school for grades 7-12 for day and boarding students with a diverse student body drawn from around the world. In this setting NYMA students have been ‘Set Apart for Excellence’ for over 125 years.
What makes us unique, and indeed so successful, is our teaching principals. We maintain small class sizes enhancing personalized instruction with a 1:12 teacher to student ratio. Class sizes range from 4 – 15 students and in our rigorous 21st Century curriculum we offer a wide range of courses*. Our student-accessible faculty comes from a broad range of teaching experiences and boasts a Boarding School Review ranking of 11th nationwide based on the percent of faculty with advanced degrees. The faculty also provides guided study periods at specified times. Additionally, our cadets have designated exclusive study time in their rooms which is protected from outside distractions. Our academic program has prepared our graduates to attend such top schools as George Washington University, Northeastern, Boston University, Penn State, Rutgers and the Service Academies to name but a few.
At NYMA we believe in the development of the well rounded cadet. Therefore, all cadets participate in our athletic program which enables them to compete at the highest level of competition they are capable. To support this, we offer a wide range of sports and activities to choose from. As a member of the New England Prep School Athletic Council, the Academy’s interscholastic athletic program has produced many division championship teams.
To support and reinforce our strong academic and development environment, NYMA uses the “military model.” Having been awarded the U.S. Department of the Army’s highest designation, “Honor Unit with Distinction,” our Army Junior Reserve Officer Training (JROTC) program teaches cadets the principles of leadership, time management, organization, task prioritization, critical thinking, problem solving and self-discipline. Under the supervision of the Senior Army Instructor and the Army Instructor, the model provides a promotion and reward system that motivates our cadets and prepares them for success both at NYMA and ultimately for life beyond our gates. This leadership training process helps cadets develop into well-rounded students and contributing citizens. Attendance at NYMA incurs absolutely no military service obligation. In fact, most of our graduates use the skills learned here in pursuit of excellence in civilian endeavors. However, having been designated an Honor Unit with Distinction, our JROTC program has the unique authority to grant nominations to the nation’s Service Academies.
Our rigorous academic curriculum grounded by a demand for competence in the classical disciplines thoughtfully prepares NYMA graduates to seek out extraordinary lives that are truely ‘Set Apart for Excellence.’
*NYMA also offers a program incorporating English as a Second Language
