Welcome from the Superintendent
We are foremost an academically
focused college preparatory boarding school with top-level athletic
teams and an exceptional leadership program that challenges our cadets
to be good citizens.
Thank you for visiting New York Military Academy on the Web.
NYMA
was founded in 1889 by Charles Jefferson Wright, a Civil War veteran
and former schoolteacher from New Hampshire. Wright believed that a
military structure provided the best environment for academic
achievement. Although NYMA proudly adheres to this tradition of a
structured learning environment, we are foremost an academically
focused college preparatory boarding school with top-level athletic
teams and an exceptional leadership program that challenges our cadets
to be good citizens. NYMA provides one of the best whole person
educational programs as we continuously strive to "Make Good Kids
Better."
Our teachers are committed to enabling our cadets to
attain their full academic potential as we prepare them to attend the
college of their choice. At NYMA, we offer Honors, AP and college level
classes on campus, as well as online college level courses through the
State University of New York. NYMA has been graduating leaders in
business, government and the arts for nearly 120 years. Our graduates
speak volumes about the quality of our educational process.
At
NYMA we use the military model as the foundation for our character and
leadership development program. Our Junior Reserve Officer Training
Corps (JROTC) unit continues to be recommended as an "Honor Unit with
Distinction." This is the highest possible classification that can be
awarded to a JROTC unit and very few receive it. The "Honor Unit with
Distinction" designation entitles NYMA to nominate our cadets to the
U.S. Service Academies (West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force
Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy). This privilege is normally
reserved for the President, Vice-President and members of Congress.
Achieving this level of distinction is a testimonial to the teamwork,
motivation, discipline and school pride of our cadets, faculty and
staff.
I invite you to peruse our website, consider our
programs, and learn more about NYMA. We have many success stories, and
we want you to consider experiencing one, too. Thank you for visiting
New York Military Academy.
Sincerely,
CAPT Robert D. Watts
