Welcome from the Superintendent
Set Apart for Excellence
Greetings and welcome to the New York Military Academy website. New York Military Academy, also known as NYMA, has a rich tradition and a 125-year history of educating, developing, and preparing students for a successful future. Our motto is “Set Apart for Excellence”, and we believe in the ability of all our students to excel in every facet of their experience at NYMA. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to preparing each student for college and beyond. New York Military Academy enables its graduates to enter college Inspired, Engaged, and Ready for the future.
Established in 1889, New York Military Academy is a college preparatory school for day and boarding students in grades 8 through 12. The 120-acre campus is conveniently located just 60 miles north of New York City. We are dedicated to developing young leaders who have that competitive hunger and desire for success and fulfillment in college and in life, and who desire to lead in the future. At NYMA, we produce leaders who go on to service academies and great careers in the military, but also leaders who attend some of the top colleges and universities in the nation. Utilizing a military community model and a rigorous academic curriculum grounded by competence in the classical disciplines, NYMA graduates are thoughtfully prepared to seek out extraordinary lives of accountability and service.
Our cadets pursue a relevant 21st Century curriculum alongside a structured, leadership- and life-skills focused military program guided by the school’s decades-long affiliation with the United States Army JROTC. Our school continues to be designated an Honor Unit with Distinction by the Department of the Army and enjoys a solid reputation as one of the nation's leading institutions in the number of its graduates attending The United States Military Academy at West Point, The United States Air Force Academy and the United States Naval Academy. We also have an excellent track record of cadets competing for and earning four-year ROTC College Scholarships.
NYMA's competitive academic, experiential education and athletic programs are enhanced by a structured boarding environment that includes daily tutorials, a nightly, mentored study hall, a robust ESL program and a 7:1 student/teacher ratio in the classroom. Cadets enjoy substantive opportunities not only to learn accountability but to practice peer leadership and to accept important responsibility. One of the things that set NYMA apart from the average college prep school is what we call our "real-life leadership lab". Putting our cadets in positions of increased accountability and responsibility in the Cadet Corps, while at the same time requiring them to maintain a high level of academic and athletic participation, requires them to constantly improve their organization, planning, and time-management skills. We believe development in these critical areas gives our graduates a distinct advantage over others as they transition into some of the more prestigious colleges and universities in America.
For over a century, this culture of cadet leadership, community responsibility and personal resilience has built an esprit de corps among the NYMA student body and graduates that has created a powerful alumni network helping set the standard for success and achievement. The many distinguished scholars, businessmen and -women, male and female career military officers and world-renowned artists among our alumni energize the campus and provide our cadets with a distinguished networking and mentoring base to help them as they step into the future.
