For 125 years, New York Military Academy has been preparing young men and women for college. Today, we proudly continue that tradition, sending many of our cadets on to prestigious top-tier schools, including the United States
Service Academies. Furthermore, many of our graduates receive full or partial merit-based scholarships to the colleges and universities of their choice. Why? Because students at New York Military Academy are truly Set Apart for Excellence.
The mission at New York Military Academy is to develop students in mind, body and character to prepare them for further education and enable them to become effective leaders and citizens.
To that end, we offer a rigorous 21st century curriculum based squarely on the principles that have earned New York Military Academy an enduring place in America's independent school legacy.
Our Four Pillars of Success:
Academics: The Intentional Learner
The academic program at New York Military Academy is focused on developing successful and disciplined college-ready learners. Our challenging curriculum is delivered in small classes where students enjoy a 12:1 student-teacher ratio, which provides them with the kind of personalized attention that is rare in secondary education today.
Our academic program is further enhanced by a carefully structured environment that includes faculty-staffed learning labs and supervised evening study periods which are protected from outside distractions. At NYMA, students don't simply "fall through the cracks"; individual student progress is constantly monitored and addressed via our mentoring and advisory system in which each cadet is paired with a faculty mentor for the long term.
Our highly-qualified faculty have recently earned us high marks from Boarding School Review based on the percentage of faculty at NYMA with advanced degrees. Drawn from around the world, our faculty bring a global perspective to the campus that fully embraces the diversity on which the New York Military Academy community thrives, and which informs their efforts in the classroom to produce critical-thinking lifelong learners.
Athletics: Wellness and Fair Play
At New York Military Academy, we believe personal fitness and healthy competition are vital to the development of vibrant young men and women. As such, every cadet at NYMA participates in our athletic program. We offer a wide variety of varsity, junior varsity and middle school sports, ranging from football to ultimate Frisbee, so there is always something for everyone, regardless of athletic ability. The athletic program at NYMA provides our cadets with the opportunities they need to develop a sense of fair play and sportsmanship and a real-world understanding of the value and power of teamwork, traits that serve them well both on and off the playing field.
Character: Doing the Right Thing
Developing global citizens with integrity is central to our mission at New York Military Academy, so we work hard to instill in our cadets an appreciation for accountability and responsibility, not only for themselves, but also for others. By consistently reinforcing the Cadet Honor Code, "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those that do", NYMA raises the bar on expectations for student behavior. For NYMA cadets, treating others with respect, honesty, and fairness is the norm, not the exception.
Leadership: Real-Life Leadership Lab
Our Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) unit has been designated an Honor Unit with Distinction, the highest acclamation awarded by the U.S. Department of the Army for such a program. Participation in JROTC teaches our cadets essential skills for future success such as self-discipline, self-confidence, time management, task prioritization, and honorable decision making. Our JROTC system also serves as a reward and promotion mechanism that motivates cadets to do their best in everything they undertake at the Academy. Additionally, it provides our cadets the opportunity to march down 5th Avenue in New York City as we are routinely invited to participate in such high visibility events such as the Veterans Day and Columbus Day parades.
There is absolutely no military service obligation associated with attending New York Military Academy, and, in fact, most of our graduates do not pursue a military career. However, many young men and women do attend NYMA because our JROTC program has the unique authority to grant nominations to the United States Service Academies by virtue of its JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction status. Graduates of NYMA are also especially well prepared as candidates for 4-year Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) college scholarships.
New York Military Academy's student population is a model of diversity. Cadets come to NYMA from across the United States and around the world (approximately 20% of our population is international), and this exposure to varied cultures, religions, and ethnicities adds immeasurably to our cadets' understanding of the world. At New York Military Academy, promoting tolerance and celebrating diversity are a way of life.
English as a Second Language
Students seeking a well-rounded English language immersion program should consider all New York Military Academy has to offer. Our English as a Second Language faculty work hand in hand with the other faculty to help make the student’s transition into our community of learners fast and rewarding. We place each incoming student in classes based on TOEFL Junior® test scores, then create an individualized program that takes into account both the student's English proficiency level and personal goals. At the heart of our ESL program are experienced instructors who understand what it takes to expand their students' English skills so that they can be successful while they are at NYMA as well as competitive in applying to English-speaking colleges upon graduation.
College Admissions Assistance
At New York Military Academy, preparation for the college application process begins in earnest as early as the sophomore year, when 10th graders join our juniors and seniors in attending our annual College Fair. From that point forward, College Guidance staff work with each student individually to execute a plan for rounding out the student's total college application package, including suggesting community service and extracurricular opportunities, strengthening academic weaknesses, identifying potential colleges and universities, composing college application essays, and navigating the college application process. By early in their senior year, many NYMA cadets have already been accepted by the college of their choice.
New York Military Academy regularly serves as a host site for administration of the PSAT, SAT and ACT college admissions tests, so our students can take the tests as often as they wish right on our campus. ESL students preparing college applications are transported to approved test sites to sit for the TOEFL Test.
Located in the scenic Hudson Valley, nestled in the close-knit village of Cornwall on Hudson, New York, NYMA enjoys the benefit of easy access to one of the most renowned cities in the world, New York City. From our campus nestled in the beautiful Hudson River Valley, we are only a short distance from La Guardia, JFK and Newark international airports, and even closer to Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, making travel to and from school a breeze for cadets and their families.
