Robert H. Benmosche '62

Robert Benmosche entered New York Military Academy in 1959. While at the academy, he participated in varsity football and wrestling, lettering in both his senior year. He was awarded the Greenblatt trophy for outstanding lineman and placed second in his weight class at the Westchester County wrestling tournament. He was a member of the Pi Phi fraternity, performed in the annual production of Yea! Furlough and participated in the candlelight service.

After graduating from NYMA, Mr. Benmosche attended Alfred University where he received a bachelors degree in mathematics. He then served for two years as a lieutenant in the United States Army Signal Corps.

In 1977, Mr. Benmosche joined Chase Manhattan Bank as a vice-president for human resources. In 1982, he moved to Paine Webber, and two years later was named senior vice-president for marketing. Subsequently, he was named chief financial officer for retail business. In 1987, he became director of securities operations, and in 1989, was given responsibility for technology organization and facilities and administration organization. In 1992, his responsibilities were further expanded to include human resources.

He joined Metlife in 1995 as an executive vice-president to direct the merger of Metlife and New England Financial. In 1996, he was named executive vice-president in charge of individual business with responsibilities for all product development, marketing and sales efforts focused on Metlife's individual customers. He was named president, chief operating officer and a member of the board of directors in November 1997. At his retirement in 2006, he was Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Metlife, Inc., and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He is currently a member of the board of directors of Credit Suisse Group.
